About Us
North Country Retrievers and North Country Kennels are the products of a friendship/business relationship established in 1985 between Greg Monroe and Rick Steenhoven.
While residing in Alaska, a life long relationship was kindled between the two of them and their families. They are both natives of South Dakota, which is where their passion for retrievers, and upland and waterfowl hunting was fostered.
Rick and Greg have a combined total of over 65 years of pheasant and waterfowl hunting experience and have logged over 35 years of professional dog training. Rick and Greg actively support the retriever and pointing lab testing programs by serving as field trial and hunt test judges. They actively campaign their dogs in NAHRA, UKC/HRC, AKC, and APLA field tests.
As specialists in the retriever breed they have developed a breeding program that is unsurpassed. Our breeding philosophy dictates that OFA certifications, CERF certifications, and that Field Titles are in place prior to a breeding ever being considered. Upon arrival of hunting season these two do what they do best, and love most. They load up their posse of world class hunting retrievers and head to South Dakota. Their bird hunting knowledge and dog savvy are put to the test as they manage a pheasant hunting service and serve as outfitters and professional guides.
